Here is exactly what we did. You can replicate this yourself at any computer store before buying:
- Open the same high-resolution photo on both laptops side by side. We use a portrait shot with deep shadows and bright highlights — the kind of image that stresses any display.
- Drag the brightness slider to 50% on both machines (this is critical — most stores crank MacBook brightness to 100% to make the display "pop").
- Look at the black areas of the image — the shadows, the dark background, the negative space.
- On the MacBook, those blacks will be dark grey. On the ThinkPad OLED, those blacks will be pure black — as in, the pixel is literally turned off.
- Now look at the color saturation in the highlights. The OLED's 100% DCI-P3 coverage shows colors the MacBook's mini-LED simply cannot reproduce.

Why OLED Beats Mini-LED — The Technical Truth
The MacBook Pro M3 uses a mini-LED display — a technology where hundreds of small LEDs sit behind the LCD panel to provide "local dimming". The marketing says "1000 nits sustained brightness" and "true blacks". The reality is different.
Mini-LED cannot turn off individual pixels. It can only dim zones of LEDs — typically 1,000 to 2,000 zones across the entire display. When the screen shows a black area next to a bright area (think: a starfield, a city at night, a portrait with dark background), the LEDs behind the black area cannot fully turn off because the same zone is also lighting the bright area. The result is "blooming" — a visible grey haze around bright objects on dark backgrounds.
OLED does not have this problem. Each pixel is its own light source. When a pixel needs to be black, it turns off completely. The result is infinite contrast ratio — pure black, not dark grey. For photo editing, this means you see shadow detail that mini-LED simply hides. For video editing, it means your dark scenes look the way the director intended.
